Career Pathways - How do you get there?
Exploring the routes available to you
Learning Objectives
By the end you will: (1) Understand the difference between vocational and academic routes (2) Know how to research a specific career pathway (3) Start planning your own preferred pathway
Two Main Routes
Academic Route
GCSEs → A-Levels → University → Graduate role Advantages: + Theory-based learning + Maximum flexibility in career choices + Well understood by employers Things to consider: - Takes longer (usually 5-7 years post-GCSE) - Student loan debt (avg. £50k)
Vocational Route
GCSEs → T-Level/BTEC/Apprenticeship → Employment Advantages: + Practical, hands-on learning + Earn while you learn (apprenticeships) + Direct route into specific industries Things to consider: - Less flexibility to switch sectors later - Some higher roles still prefer degree-holders
