Write your own first portfolio plan, with a deadline on it This is a labour market lesson as much as a creative one. You will be using real data about pay and entry routes, not guesses.

The UK industry, by city

Games: Rockstar North in Edinburgh, Rare in Leicestershire, Creative Assembly in Horsham, Playground Games in Leamington Spa, Frontier and Ninja Theory in Cambridge, Sumo Digital in Sheffield, Media Molecule in Guildford, Team17 in Wakefield. Animation and VFX: Aardman in Bristol, Blue Zoo and Framestore in London, Axis Studios in Glasgow. Two things worth knowing: Leamington Spa is known in the industry as Silicon Spa, and Abertay University in Dundee ran the world's first computer games degree. How a game gets made

In groups of three or four, choose one game or one animated film everyone in the group knows. 1. List every job you think existed to make it. Aim for twenty. Use the roles from slide 5. 2. Circle the five jobs you had never thought about before today. 3. For ONE of those five, find out: what does the job involve day to day, what qualification or skill do people usually have, and roughly what does it pay at entry level? Use the National Careers Service, ScreenSkills or Ukie. 4. Note your source next to each answer. If you cannot source it, do not write it. 5. Prepare thirty seconds to report back: the job, the route in, and one thing that surprised you. Stretch: find a UK studio that has hired for that role in the last year.

What a portfolio has to prove

Studios are not looking for the prettiest picture. They are looking for evidence that you can do the job on a Tuesday. Six to ten pieces, no more. Your weakest piece sets your level, so cut it. For each piece show: the brief you set yourself, your references, the rough versions, what went wrong, and the final. Specialise. A portfolio that is half character art and half UI reads as undecided. Studios hire for one seat. Breakdowns matter - show the wireframe, the layers, the rig, the process. A finished image with no breakdown proves nothing. Finish things. Three finished pieces beat twelve abandoned ones.

Two routes to the same seat

Degree route

Level 3 at 16 - art, computing, games design, or A Levels including art or maths. Then a specialist degree. Look for courses accredited by Ukie or ScreenSkills, and ask what percentage of graduates are working in the industry. Strengths: time to build a portfolio, tutors, studio-standard software, a cohort. Cost: tuition fees and three years before you earn.

Apprenticeship route

Level 3 at 16, then a creative or digital apprenticeship, or a junior QA or production role. Degree-level apprenticeships exist in software and digital, and starts grew 20% in a year. Strengths: paid from day one, real production experience, no tuition fees. Cost: fewer vacancies, fierce competition, and less time to build personal work.

Before you go

What you now know: the industry is bigger than two job titles, it is spread across the UK rather than concentrated in London, and there are two legitimate routes to the same seat. What matters most: finished work with visible process, aimed at one seat. This week: 1. Make the folder and put something in it today. 2. Look up one studio within an hour of here and see what they have hired for. 3. Book a slot with the careers adviser if you want to plan Post-16 around this. Nobody is hired for potential. They are hired for evidence - and evidence starts as a rough draft you were willing to keep.
