Gatsby Benchmark 5
Encounters with Employers and Employees
Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace.
What Benchmark 5 means in practice
The updated benchmark sets a floor that the original did not: every year, from the age of 11, every pupil should participate in at least one meaningful encounter with an employer. Colleges and ITPs owe at least two a year, with at least one delivered through the learner's curriculum area. 'Meaningful' is defined - a clear purpose shared with the employer and the young person, learning outcomes matched to their needs, two-way interaction, and time afterwards to reflect.
What evidence is required
- At least one meaningful employer encounter per pupil per academic year, from Year 7
- Per-pupil participation records, not just event registers
- Evidence each encounter met the four meaningful-encounter criteria
- Evidence of diverse sectors and employer sizes represented
- Employer feedback and impact records
Activities that satisfy Benchmark 5
- Careers fairs with multiple employers
- Employer speaker assemblies and form time sessions
- Virtual employer Q&A sessions
- Industry visit days
- Employer-led workshops and mock interviews
How Chapter tracks it
Benchmark 5 evidence, without the data entry
Employers sign up via a volunteer link and are confirmed on the event; afterwards an Encounter Pack collects student and employer feedback and attendance is taken per pupil - so every encounter is logged and proven meaningful. The Provider CRM tracks sector diversity across the year.
In Chapter Schools
EventsEvidences it

Builds the register from year groups, tutor groups or named pupils, so coverage lands on the pupils who need it.
In the Chapter game
In-game employer encountersEvidences it
Employer characters and enterprise activities in the game write BM5 evidence for pupils who complete them.
Preparation & reflection quests
A quest tied to an event gives pupils the preparation and reflection that turn an encounter from attended into meaningful.
