Gatsby › BenchmarksThe Benchmark Compass - eight petals, each filling outward from the hub as coverage grows.
Why it matters
What changes
The honest version of the before, and what it looks like once this is running.
- A spreadsheet somebody rebuilds by hand every term
- Coverage argued from memory rather than evidence
- Gaps found in March, when there's no time left to fix them
- Every Ofsted request answered with a fortnight of digging
- Every event, lesson and session lands as benchmark evidence automatically
- RAG status per benchmark, recalculated as the term runs
- The biggest gap named on the page, with the sub-criterion behind it
- An inspector-ready pack downloaded in one click
How it works

In detail
How it actually works
The mechanics behind the screenshot.
Coverage is scored, not estimated
Each benchmark carries a percentage of pupils with qualifying evidence, a RAG band and a target. The bands are fixed so a number means the same thing in September and in July - and so a governor reading the report and a careers lead reading the dashboard are reading the same scale.
- Met at 75%+, Developing from 40–74%, Needs attention below 40%
- Meaningful encounters counted separately from supplementary activity
- Whole-school, per-year-group and per-benchmark views off the same data
- Statutory milestone and Baker Clause gaps raised as their own alert
| Benchmark | Coverage | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Stable careers programme | 88% | Met |
| 4 · Linking curriculum to careers | 52% | Developing |
| 6 · Experiences of workplaces | 45% | Developing |
| 8 · Personal guidance | 92% | Met |
One dataset, eight export formats
The same evidence base drives every audience. Inspectors get the pack they expect, governors get a readable summary, and schools that also keep a Compass+ tracker get a CSV that imports straight into it - no dual keying.
- Ofsted Evidence Pack and Ofsted Evidence (PDF)
- Governor Report and the shareable Governance Pack
- CSV spreadsheet and a PowerPoint deck
- Compass+ export and Year in Review (Wrapped)

Questions
The things schools ask
From work you were already doing. Events, lessons, guidance sessions, work experience and student activity in the Chapter app each write a benchmark evidence row when they complete. You can also record evidence by hand for anything that happened off-platform.
Chapter tracks meaningful encounters separately from supplementary activity, because the benchmarks are assessed on the former. Both are shown, so you can see the difference between a cohort that has been exposed to something and one that has genuinely engaged.
Yes. The compass switches cohort in one click, and there is a separate year-group heatmap showing every year against every benchmark.
No - it feeds it. Chapter exports a student-level CSV in the CEC Tracker schema, so your Compass+ record stays current without anyone re-typing it.
